PDFs are the format printers actually receive, and they are also where naive converters fail: a PDF can mix RGB images, vector fills, gradients and text colors in one file. This converter maps every RGB object in the document — across all pages — through the press ICC profile, while text and vectors that are already pure black stay on the black plate as 100% K (see rich black for why that matters). The file stays a PDF and the layout is untouched.

Raster images are converted pixel-by-pixel through the same ICC profile — not a channel swap, so out-of-gamut colors are mapped to their closest printable match instead of clipping. JPEG and TIFF can carry CMYK natively; PNG cannot store CMYK at all, so a converted PNG is delivered in a print-ready format that can.

RGB describes emitted light; CMYK describes ink on paper. A screen can show saturated blues, greens and oranges that no ink set can physically reproduce, so some color shift in conversion is unavoidable — the question is whether it is controlled. A proper conversion uses a press ICC profile (Coated FOGRA39 for European offset, GRACoL for US) to map out-of-gamut colors predictably, keeps true black as 100% K, and respects limits like total ink coverage.

Some print shops prefer receiving RGB files and converting in-house with their own press profile; many others require CMYK on delivery and reject or silently convert anything else. Converting yourself is the predictable path: you see the proof, you control black handling, and there are no surprises at the press. If your printer published a spec sheet, follow it.
Either way, run the converted file through the free PDF preflight checker before submitting — color is only one of the things printers reject files for; bleed, resolution and fonts are the others.
