Summary Overview
Why the ISO PDF/X standard is the foundation for reliable, error-free file transfers in professional printing.
What is PDF/X?
PDF/X is a family of ISO standards designed specifically for the exchange of print-ready graphic arts files.
While standard PDFs can contain interactive elements, attachments, and scripts suited for digital reading, PDF/X restricts these features to ensure the file can be processed and printed consistently by any industrial press.
Common versions:
- PDF/X-1a: The most restrictive standard. It requires all colors to be CMYK or spot colors, all fonts to be embedded, and prohibits live transparency.
- PDF/X-4: The modern standard. It supports color-managed workflows (including RGB elements with ICC profiles), embedded fonts, and allows live transparency.
The Print Risk: Processing Crashes on Press RIPs
Sending a standard PDF to a professional press can lead to processing errors:
- Digital Elements: Video files, web links, or form fields in a PDF can crash Raster Image Processors (RIPs).
- Missing Profiles: The press won’t know how to convert color profiles without an embedded Output Intent, leading to color shift disputes.
How Filecheck Enforces PDF/X Standards
Filecheck validates documents against official ISO compliance rules:
- Conformance Level Detection: We verify if the PDF header and XMP metadata contain standard PDF/X keys (e.g.
GTS_PDFXVersion). - Structural Checks: We inspect the file structure to verify that fonts are embedded, page boxes are present, and there are no forbidden elements like JavaScript, attachments, or security passwords.
- Compliance Audit Reports: If a print shop requires PDF/X-4 compliance, Filecheck validates these conditions on ingest, generating compliance validation flags.
